Russia says Ukraine flew 822 drones overnight, calling it the largest attack of 2026

Ukraine launched hundreds of drones into Russia overnight on Sunday, and Russian officials called it the largest-scale Ukrainian attack of 2026, the BBC reported. Russia's defence ministry said it destroyed 822 Ukrainian drones, according to the Associated Press, and Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said some 600 were detected heading for the capital. A warehouse belonging to the online retailer Wildberries was hit and caught fire. The BBC located the site in Koledino, 25 kilometres from central Moscow, and said Sobyanin reported three injuries. AP, citing Moscow region governor Andrey Vorobyov, placed the blaze at a Wildberries warehouse in Podolsk. Ukraine's defence ministry said seven of the ten largest Wildberries logistics centres have now been disabled. Kyiv has targeted the retailer since July, saying the hubs are used to buy military equipment.

Death-toll figures differ. The BBC said at least seven people were killed in Russia: five in Rostov, a woman in Belgorod after a civilian bus was struck, and an 83-year-old man in the Moscow region. AP reported at least six deaths, counting the same five in Rostov, where governor Yury Slyusar said more than 150 drones hit three towns, plus the 83-year-old in the Moscow region. It did not mention the Belgorod bus killing. Russian strikes also hit Ukraine. The BBC said those attacks killed at least seven people and injured more than 39. AP reported two dead in Kryvyi Rih, one in Sumy, a man and a woman in Zaporizhzhia, and six wounded in Kyiv, including at the Pochaina book market.

AP described the assault as one of Kyiv's largest aerial attacks of the war. It did not call it the largest of the war, and the BBC attributed the 2026 record claim to Russian officials. With ground gains limited, both sides have leaned on drones and missiles. Wildberries is often compared to Amazon in Russia. Hitting it is a way to make the war visible inside Russia without taking a city. Zelensky said 13 Ukrainian regions had been attacked this week with more than 1,550 attack drones, nearly 1,560 guided aerial bombs, and 62 missiles.

Russia said its own strikes targeted a FirePoint facility making parts for Ukrainian Flamingo missiles and a factory making drone components in Kyiv. Ukrainian officials pointed to civilian damage, including the book market. Both sides accuse each other of targeting civilians. A Spanish F-18 on NATO air policing shot down a drone over Romania, the Romanian defence ministry said.
