Taylor Swift released a Grammy Museum mashup of memory songs

Taylor Swift has put out the Grammy Museum session, and the mashup is the reason it exists.

The Recording Academy posted the full video on Monday. The event itself was on 18 August, a closed "Icon Sessions" retrospective in the Clive Davis Theater in Los Angeles, for the Academy's Songwriters and Composers Wing. Fewer than 200 people were in the room. They kept the set quiet until the tape landed.

After a 42-minute conversation with Academy chief Harvey Mason Jr, Swift sat at the Eras Tour piano and played about six minutes. The medley braids "I Knew It, I Knew You", the song she wrote for Toy Story 5, with "August" and "All Too Well". She told the room she picked them for a through line of memory, the way she used to build surprise medleys on tour. Variety noted that the strands overlap until the last lines are hybrids: "I remember it, you were the free fall of being younger" and "I knew it, I knew it all too well."

The talk was about craft, not the ring. She said she feels more loyal to her country roots the further she gets from them. She walked Mason through "Tim McGraw", "Enchanted", "Reputation" and the difference between a decorative detail and a useful one. She also said a shocking confession is not the same thing as a deep one.

The news is that a private 20-year seminar, for the people who vote on Grammys, is now a public artefact in nomination season. She used the Toy Story song as country proof and as memory glue. That is a ballot argument as much as a mashup.
