Padikkal made 167, and India closed Day 2 in Galle at 460 for 9 after the rain

India finished a rain-hit second day of the first Test against Sri Lanka in Galle at 460 for 9, with Devdutt Padikkal's 167 the centrepiece, the Times of India reported. Heavy rain and a wet outfield washed out the morning, and play resumed at 2:35 pm. India had started the day on 288 for 2 and added 172, but Sri Lanka took seven wickets in the time available. NDTV said only 43 overs were possible. Padikkal, resuming on 131, made 167 off 230 balls with 15 fours and a six, becoming the third Indian to score 150 or more against Sri Lanka from number three after Rahul Dravid (177) and Cheteshwar Pujara (153). He was stumped by Niroshan Dickwella off Prabath Jayasuriya.

KL Rahul, who had retired hurt on 77 with cramps on day one, added five runs and fell for 82. Rishabh Pant was out for 39. Ravindra Jadeja was out for 13. Dhruv Jurel made 51 off 68, putting on 55 for the seventh wicket with Manav Suthar (24). Jayasuriya finished the day with 4 for 109 from 39 overs, and debutant off-spinner Keshara Nuwantha took 3 for 175. ESPNcricinfo said three of the first four wickets on day two fell to Nuwantha. Kuldeep Yadav (12 not out) and Prasidh Krishna (1 not out) were at the crease at stumps.

Padikkal's 167 is the innings. The rest of the day was Sri Lanka remembering how to bowl, and the weather reminding both sides that Galle in August does not owe anyone a result. India still have a big total. They also have nine down and a forecast that has been ugly all match. 460 looks commanding until you remember how few overs have been possible. I would rather have Padikkal's runs than Sri Lanka's late wickets, but the match will be decided by who gets a full day.

India have to decide whether to bat on or declare. Day 3 is Monday. NDTV, citing AccuWeather, said there is an 83 percent chance of precipitation in Galle, with hourly rain chances above 40 percent through most of the scheduled hours.
