Jharkhand minister Sudivya Kumar Sonu dies
The JMM senior leader and Giridih MLA held Higher Education, Urban Development and Tourism. The party called his death an irreparable loss.
Jharkhand Mukti Morcha senior leader and state minister Sudivya Kumar Sonu died on Sunday after a sudden illness, the party said.
Sonu was the Giridih MLA. He held Higher and Technical Education, Urban Development, and Tourism, Arts, Culture, Sports and Youth Affairs.
JMM posted that the party was stunned and heartbroken. It called his death an irreparable loss for the party, the government, and Jharkhand.
Economic Times and PTI carried the announcement early Sunday. Sonu had been a cabinet minister since December 2024.
Sonu sat on three portfolios that touch jobs, cities, and tourism in a state that sells both mining and pilgrimage. A sudden exit forces a cabinet reshuffle and a bye-election clock in Giridih.
JMM runs the government with allies. Losing a senior organisational face mid-term is a political hit as much as an administrative one. The party framed it that way itself.
For readers outside Jharkhand, the news is a reminder that state cabinets still turn on a handful of people who hold many files at once.
The government will have to reassign his ministries. JMM will decide the Giridih succession. Condolences from the opposition and the Centre will follow the usual path. The hard news is the vacancy.
