India beat Sri Lanka by 165 runs in Galle, and Manav Suthar took ten wickets in the match

India closed the first Test in Galle on Wednesday afternoon, bowling Sri Lanka out for 206 and winning by 165 runs. The hosts had begun the last day at 84 for 4, chasing 372. The weather stayed clear, which is the one thing this match had not offered them all week.
Dhananjaya de Silva and Sonal Dinusha added 95 for the fifth wicket. De Silva made 59. Dinusha, who had already scored a hundred in the first innings, made 84 and was 16 short of doing it again. Ravindra Jadeja broke the stand when de Silva top-edged a sweep. Prasidh Krishna then had Niroshan Dickwella caught, and Sri Lanka went to lunch at 175 for 6.
Manav Suthar did the rest. He had Dinusha caught at leg-slip by Dhruv Jurel, then bowled Prabath Jayasuriya and had Lahiru Kumara caught behind in the same over. Kumara survived the hat-trick ball and not the last one. Keshara Nuwantha was bowled soon after, Suthar's tenth wicket of the match, with the second new ball still 2.2 overs away. Suthar's second-innings figures were 6 for 55. He now has two five-fors in his first two Tests. India wrapped it up 36 minutes after lunch, a session to spare. Rain arrived in time for the presentation and then left again.
Devdutt Padikkal, who made 167 and 44, was player of the match.
We have spent two days watching this Test get stolen by rain and bad light, and then Suthar took four wickets in ten balls and the argument ended. India had lost two of their last three series in spin-friendly conditions, including at home to South Africa last November. This was their first World Test Championship win since Ahmedabad last October. Shubman Gill's side is young enough that a ten-wicket match haul from a left-arm spinner in his second Test is the story you actually wanted from Galle, not another weather report.
The second Test starts in Colombo on 23 August. India lead 1-0. Twelve WTC points travel with them. Sri Lanka have three days to decide what they do with Suthar the next time he tosses it up.
