India's GST collections just hit a 14-month high, and imports are doing the heavy lifting

Gross GST revenue rose 15.4% in July, and the growth isn't coming from where you'd expect.

Gross GST collections rose 15.4% year-on-year to ₹2.11 lakh crore in July, the fastest growth in 14 months, and this is the second straight month collections have stayed above the ₹2 lakh crore mark. Domestic transactions grew a solid but unremarkable 10.1%, to ₹1.45 lakh crore. The real story is imports, where GST collections jumped 28.8%, to ₹66,511 crore.

A tax number this dry usually doesn't tell you much, but the split here does. Domestic consumption growing at 10% is healthy and ordinary. Import-linked GST growing at nearly 29% means Indian businesses and consumers are buying a lot more from abroad, and that's a more interesting story than the headline number, because it says something about what people are actually spending on right now, not just how much.

The next print, for August, will show whether this was a one-month spike tied to festival-season stocking up early, or the start of a real trend. If import growth keeps outpacing domestic growth by this much, that's worth its own explainer.
