Chelsea put a Friday 5pm, £120 million clock on Enzo Fernandez, and Manchester City have to blink

Chelsea have told interested clubs they want £120 million or more for Enzo Fernandez, and they want the offer in by 17:00 BST on Friday. The 25-year-old Argentine midfielder has been in limbo since March, when he first floated a move to Real Madrid. His agent, Javier Pastore, said then that Fernandez was underpaid and wanted out after Chelsea finished 10th and lost the FA Cup final to Manchester City. Real Madrid has since said they have no intention of signing him. That leaves Manchester City as the only known suitor, under Enzo Maresca, who left Chelsea midway through last season. Chelsea paid £107 million for Fernandez from Benfica in 2023. Last season, he scored 15 goals and provided seven assists in 54 appearances, then reached the World Cup final with Argentina, where he was sent off as they lost 1-0 to Spain. He trained under new Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso for the first time on Wednesday. Chelsea say they will reintegrate him if nobody meets the number.

A Friday 5pm deadline is Chelsea's attempt to stop a transfer saga from eating into the start of the season. The fee is also them insisting they will not take a loss on a £107 million signing, even after a 10th-place year. City wanting him is the awkward part, because Maresca already knows the player from Stamford Bridge, and because City are also looking at Lille's Ayoub Bouaddi. I read this as less a romance than a pricing problem: if City really wants him, they have two days. If they do not, Fernandez goes back into Alonso's midfield as if March never happened, which is a hard sell after his own camp said he wanted to leave.

Friday at 5pm UK time is the actual news. Either City (or someone else) tables £120 million on Chelsea's terms, or Fernandez stays, and the noise has to die.
