Lokesh Kanagaraj's acting debut, DC, directed by Arun Matheswaran and co-starring Wamiqa Gabbi, finished its first week at a worldwide gross of ₹64.38 crore, according to Sacnilk figures compiled by the Times of India. India net is ₹41.65 crore. Domestic gross is ₹47.88 crore. Overseas is ₹16.50 crore. Day 7 India net was ₹3.90 crore, down 25.7% from Wednesday, across 4,611 shows. The Tamil version still does most of the work. Telugu adds a smaller slice. Hindi is a rounding error, about ₹20 lakh on Day 7.
A director who can open a film by standing in front of the camera is a different kind of South cinema bet, and the weekday hold is the part that looks like word of mouth rather than opening noise. Hindi barely showing up is the quieter fact: a Tamil action debut can print a hit without Bombay deciding it exists.
Independence Day releases arrive this weekend and will test whether DC still has seats. The next useful number is whether week two holds above a crawl, and whether the overseas ₹16.50 crore keeps dripping or dries up once the diaspora weekend is over.
