Bhagwat said a Hindu who wants no Muslims ceases to be Hindu

RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat spoke on Saturday at a New York faith conference. The gathering was billed as One World One Humanity, also called the Universal Oneness Celebration. About 5,000 people were at Madison Square Garden.

He repeated a line from 2018.

If any Hindu thinks there should be no Muslim in Bharat, that person ceases to be a Hindu. That is how he put it. He recalled a Delhi lecture series that year. Muslim attendees had asked him about Hindu Rashtra, and whether they would be driven out.

He told them no. That is not Hindutva, he said.

He also set out the rest of the argument. Hindutva recognises the dignity of every human, he said. Different paths can lead to the same goal. Religions may be different, but humanity is one. Truth is one, described in many ways.

The New York speech was a repeat of that Delhi answer, delivered to a much larger room.

Bhagwat is the head of the RSS. A line like this, said in New York to a large room, will be read as a claim about who counts as Hindu, and who belongs in India.

He presented it as a repeat of 2018. The Delhi lecture is the source he named. The audience this time was a faith conference. The size of the room was about 5,000.

The sentence will still travel. Supporters will hear inclusion. Critics will ask how it sits with the politics that surround the organisation. The speech itself did not settle that.

What he added around the line was a unity claim. He said Hindutva recognises the dignity of every human. He said different paths can lead to the same goal. He said religions may be different, and humanity is one. He said truth is one, described in many ways. Those sentences are the frame he wanted around the 2018 quote.
