BCCI seeks franchise views on the IPL Impact Player rule
All 10 teams have until 31 August to reply. The rule was expected to run at least through 2027.
The BCCI has asked all 10 IPL franchises for feedback on the Impact Player rule. The deadline is Monday, 31 August.
Cricbuzz reported the board mail. India Today and Hindustan Times carried the same thrust. The note also asks for views on umpiring, practice sessions, playing conditions, and match-day matters including the player and match official area.
The Impact Player clause is the headline item. Introduced in 2023, it lets a side make one substitution in a match. Last season produced many high totals and fresh complaints that bowlers were exposed.
Captains had pushed back before IPL 2026. Rohit Sharma, Hardik Pandya, Axar Patel and Shubman Gill are among those who have opposed the rule in public. At the captains' meeting, IPL managers had indicated the rule would stay for at least another year. The new mail cites that same meeting as the reason feedback is being collected now.
Earlier in the year, BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia said the board would review the rule after IPL 2026, and would be more likely to act if franchises raised concerns formally.
The rule looked settled through 2027. A formal ask to all franchises reopens it.
End-of-season feedback is routine. Naming Impact Player as a key cricket-operations question is not routine in the same way. That is why the mail travelled.
The fight is about team balance and all-rounder pathways. Captains say the sub reduces the need for players who can bat and bowl. Franchises that like the tactical flexibility will say so in writing. The board will then have a paper trail either way.
High-scoring IPL nights made the argument louder. Whether that is enough to change 2027 remains open.
Franchise replies are due today. The BCCI says it will compile them and take review points forward ahead of next season. No final call on keeping or scrapping the rule has been announced.
