Australia will seek a UN Security Council seat from 2029
Albanese launched the bid in New York; Finland is the other Western European nominee.
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said on Monday that Australia will bid for a non-permanent United Nations Security Council seat for 2029-30. Speaking in New York on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, he said Australia's last two-year term ended in 2014 and that the country expects strong support from Pacific island states and Southeast Asia. Finland is the other nominee from the Western European and Others Group. The secret ballot for that term is expected in 2028.
A Council seat is limited leverage, but it is still a seat at the table on sanctions, peace operations, and crisis votes. Australia is framing the bid around AI and climate as decade-end problems.
