August GST hits nearly ₹2 lakh crore
Collections rose 14.8%. Bulk car sales jumped 36%. UPI set another record.
India's gross GST collections for August rose about 14.8% from a year earlier to roughly ₹1.99 lakh crore, close to the ₹2 lakh crore mark that headlines used. Domestic transactions were up about 9.3%. Collections tied to imports jumped about 29% to around ₹62,604 crore, helped by higher prices for crude, fertiliser, and bullion.
Net GST after refunds was weaker. Refunds surged about 68% to ₹31,795 crore, so the net take grew more slowly than the gross headline.
Other August indicators pointed the same way on consumption. Bulk car sales rose 36% to about 448,000 units. UPI processed a record 24.51 billion transactions worth ₹29.82 lakh crore, up roughly 22% by volume and 20% by value. Power use was up 12.9% year on year.
April to August gross GST is running about 11% ahead of last year. The GST Council meets next on 12 September, and consultants are already arguing for easier input-tax-credit rules and lighter audits.
A strong GST print is the government's favourite real-time map of demand. Imports are doing a lot of the heavy lifting this month, which is not the same story as a pure domestic boom.
Still, cars, UPI, and power all moved up together. That is hard to dismiss as one noisy tax line. The open political fight is separate: the government is celebrating growth numbers, while Congress says households feel unemployment and price pressure more than GDP slides.
The 12 September GST Council meeting is the near-term policy date. Whether refunds stay this high, and whether domestic GST keeps compounding after last year's rate cuts, will decide if August was a peak or a new floor.
